The Chapel

ST. EDMUND’S CHAPEL

This chapel is entered under the organ and is on the north aisle of the church.  The altar is of Bethersden marble and is believed to be the tomb of Thomas Horne, who died in 1471. The arms, forming two of the carved panels, are repeated on the headstones of the pillars supporting the arch which separates the chapel from the north aisle and are almost obscured by the organ.

To the left of the altar, on the north wall is the memorial to the Viscount Chilston of Chilston Park whose descendants have been patrons of the Living - in other words, they used to influence the choice of a new vicar.

In the north wall of the chapel is a door to the turret staircase which gave access to a medieval rood screen that spanned the full width of the church.

The two manual organ of 1910, with its pneumatic action, is a good example of the work of Messrs. Norman & Beard from that period.
